Meta Horizon Managed Services Goes Free: What This Means for Enterprise VR Users

January 16, 2026

On January 15th, Meta announced a significant shift in their enterprise VR strategy: Horizon Managed Services (HMS) will become completely free starting February 20, 2026.

For those unfamiliar, HMS is Meta's required business platform for enrolling Quest devices into device management—essential infrastructure for any organization deploying VR headsets at scale.

What's Changing

The Good News:

  • HMS will be free to use starting February 20, 2026
  • Meta will continue to fix bugs and provide support through January 4, 2030
  • Your existing MDM platforms (ArborXR, ManageXR, etc.) will continue working seamlessly with HMS throughout this period

What to Know:

  • Meta will discontinue commercial SKUs for Quest devices
  • However, you can still purchase and manage consumer Meta devices through meta.com, Amazon, Best Buy, and other retail channels
  • HMS enters "maintenance mode" through 2030, ensuring stability while Meta focuses on next-generation platforms

What This Means for Nanome Users

If you're running Nanome on Meta Quest devices, nothing changes immediately. Your current setup will continue working as expected through at least 2030.

For organizations with existing HMS licensing budgets: This transition represents an opportunity to reallocate previously committed HMS licensing costs toward expanding your VR infrastructure, additional Nanome capabilities, or other strategic research technology investments.

Looking Ahead: Android XR

As Meta transitions HMS to maintenance mode, the industry is evolving. Nanome is a launch partner for Android XR, which recently became available for enterprise deployments.

If you're interested in future-proofing your VR infrastructure and exploring migration to Android XR, we're here to support that transition.

Important compatibility note: Nanome v2.4 and newer versions support Android XR. Earlier versions are not currently compatible.
